Untitled grief

For the innocent who die violently

It was the heat death
of the universe :
the flash and rattle
of guns shot
from cradled arms
the spark and smoke
of explosion thrown
from gentle grasps
the blast and shudder
of bombs tossed
from open hands

It was the heat death
of the universe :
the leaky wheeze
of energy
from shattered spirits
the slow burn
of kinetic life
from punctured souls
the quiet hiss
of radiant potential
from fractured hearts

It was the heat death
of the universe :
the dulled anguish
of collective humanity
from loss upon loss
the steady dissipation
of silent dark stillness
from bereft mourners
the stifled roar and rush
of impotent anger
from those left to live.
