part

i do not want to
save anyone or even
be the glue that
holds things together

i want to be
part of something
brighter and better
than my truest self

  1. I love the way this sounds, but mistrust the sentiment expressed. Most people in a partnership that works take turns at being the glue that holds things together. While I certainly understand (and have experienced) the desire to be part of something brighter and better than oneself, it is now a desire of which I’m suspicious. As bright, as good — yes. More bright and better, however, sets off warning bells and suggests a sense of deficiency in self that can never be filled up from anything outside. Perhaps that’s what your poem is telling us?

  2. I like this very much.
I guess that a deep understanding of their truest self would be needed by an individual to help them decide which particular brighter and better something to choose to be part of?
And might not a proportion of those potential somethings actually lead some individuals back to saving others and holding things together- but maybe with a very different awareness and motivation?
Just thinking aloud… and thank you for posting it.
